Purgatory Cellars Winery is toasting a season full of milestones.

Founded in 2014 by Croatian winemaker Marko Ćopić, Purgatory Cellars blends traditional Old World Mediterranean winemaking with modern innovation. It sources grapes from Colorado growers and uses Georgian amphorae—an ancient method that creates complex flavors and soft tannins—for fermenting and aging.

The winery is one of few in the United States using amphorae at scale, the only one in Colorado to do so, and the first to craft sparkling wine from wine aged in clay.

Award-Winning Colorado Wine

Purgatory Cellars earned three medals at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, including a Silver Medal for its first Tempranillo, crafted entirely from scratch. Its wines have also earned medals at the Colorado Governor’s Cup since its first entry in 2015.

A Decade of Community

This summer the winery introduced Mahjong & Wine events with Evergreen Mahjong Co. 2026 marks a decade of Purgatory Cellars’ Wine of the Month Club and eleven years in business overall.

Looking ahead, the team remains focused on handcrafted award-winning wine, community events and partnerships, welcoming new visitors, and showing that Colorado wine can compete nationally and internationally.
